How Does Manipulation Under Anesthesia (MUA) Work?

On your report visit we explain what we found and how we may be able to help you.Careful selection of those most likely to respond positively to MUA has produced enthusiastic patients grateful for the procedure.

A healthy and pain free musculoskeletal system depends on the body’s ability to experience its full range of motion, function, and balance. When a severe or repetitive injury occurs, joints and muscles become so traumatized and overstressed that they no longer function as a healthy unit. This can result in severe inflammation, muscle spasms, chemical imbalance and most critically the buildup of scar tissue that restricts movement and causes chronic pain.

MUA is done under gentle twilight sedation, allowing the doctor to stretch and unlock restricted joints and break down adhesions caused by scar tissue, resulting in greater range of motion, reduced inflammation, and decreased pain. The procedure is performed at an outpatient surgery clinic, only lasts about 20 minutes, and is usually repeated over 2 or 3 days. Followed up with several weeks of specific stretching and strengthening exercises to maintain the elasticity and prevent the reformation of scar tissue, patients can usually expect a qualitative improvement in their health and wellbeing.

Why does MUA work when approaches have failed?

Joint injections and medicine-based approaches to chronic pain do little to address the presence of adhesions and scar tissue that have built up around spinal joints and within surrounding muscles, while surgery often results in the buildup of more scar tissue! Other therapeutic modalities, such as physical therapy and chiropractic, are limited in effectiveness by the patient’s ability to tolerate pain. With MUA, the doctor can bypass the limitations caused by muscle spasms and the patient’s natural pain guarding reflex. Allowed to restore normal joint motion, stretch shortened muscles, and break down the adhesions caused by scar tissue, the doctor is able to work directly with the source of pain.

Will MUA work for me? How Do I know if I’m a candidate?

In general, patients selected for manipulation under anesthesia are those who have been treated by their physician, chiropractor or physical therapist for a minimum of six to eight weeks, but have shown limited or no improvement. If this sounds like you, and you suffer from chronic pain or restricted range of movement we invite you to contact us for more information. We’re here to help you on your road to health and wholeness!
